So What Is
- Liposuction is a plastic aesthetic surgery that corrects the contours of the body by removing fatty deposits.
- The operation is not a way to lose weight, liposuction only corrects the shape of the body. Therefore, this surgery is not suitable for people who are overweight or obese.
Types and Methods
There are the following types of body contouring:
- Classic (dry) liposuction. It is performed through small punctures. The doctor will manually pump out the adipose tissues in the desired area. Of the minuses: this method is quite traumatic, and the pumped-out fat isn’t appropriate for further filling with liposuction.
- Tumescent Liposuction. Suitable for pumping out huge amounts of the adipose tissue. Saline containing an local anesthetic (lidocaine) and vasoconstrictor (epinephrine) is pumping through tiny punctures following which it’s released with fat that is excess. Not suitable for further lipofilling.
- Laser liposuction (Smart Lipo) (LAL). Through a miniature puncture in the abdomen or thighs, the plastic surgeon inserts a special probe. Laser will destroy the cells of the adipose tissue. Its remnants are removed from the body by cannula or naturally.
- Radiofrequency liposuction. Another common surgical method for removing fatty deposits. The main indications for radiofrequency lipo are folds in the waist, buttocks, and inner shoulders. During the operation, the doctor inserts electrodes through small punctures and, under the action of an electric current, the fatty tissue is converted into an emulsion, after which it is pumped out using a vacuum pump. Thanks to the coagulation of blood vessels during radiofrequency liposuction, all manipulations take place in a gentle manner without loss of blood. Disadvantages: in case of violation of the technique of performing the operation or the presence of naturally thin skin, there is a high risk of getting burns or future irregularities.
- Ultrasonic liposuction (UAL). The problem areas are treated with ultrasound, after which the fat is removed through small punctures in the skin using a vacuum pump in this type of surgical procedure.
- VASER Liposuction is a type of ultrasonic liposuction. This is the gentlest surgical technique for eliminating localized fat deposits. The peculiarity of the method lies in the use of the VASER apparatus of the same name, under the influence of which the subcutaneous fat changes its characteristics and is carefully removed through small punctures. Due to the fact that with the help of this technique the most viable fat cells are obtained, VASER ultrasonic liposuction is the gentlest body-contouring operation, which is attracting more and more doctors and patients of plastic surgery.
- Vibration liposuction (PAL). This method is performed with a cannula through punctures. Due to vibrations of 4,000 vibrations per minute, fat cells are gently separated from muscle tissue, then they are placed in a special sterile container for subsequent lipofilling.
The newest way to tighten the skin immediately after liposuction is J-Plasma.
It is a revolutionary treatment that uses helium gas and radiofrequency energy to create cold helium plasma, which is injected and used to treat the underside of the skin. The ionized gas stimulates collagen production, immediately tightening the skin.

- Men and women who have good skin elasticity, muscle tone, and are with BMI less that 30.
- Healthy people who don’t have medical conditions that can interfere with healing.
- Liposuction is more successful for nonsmokers.

Healing Process
The positive effect will be noticeable 6 months after the surgery.
In the beginning there may be pains and swelling, as well as discomfort hemorrhagic lesions. The swelling could spread into the legs. It is important to wear a corrective pair of underwear round all the time, to shield your skin against direct sun exposure, avoid excessive heat chemical and mechanical peels, hard washcloths and avoid physical activity for one month.
Scars or sutures following the introduction of tubes are treated using an antiseptic. After 1-2 weeks of procedure, the puffiness will diminish and the skin tone gets restored. To speed up healing, a program of massage therapy is recommended. You are able to take off your corrective underwear in the evening, but you should wear it for about 4-6 weeks.
Within 3-4 weeks the body eliminates the dead cells of fat. The skin is firmer, and the figure takes on the ideal shape. The proper nutrition is crucial to ensure that you don’t gain weight. Scars and sutures following surgery must be covered by a bandage or a garment to guard against the effects of the environment.
If you follow all medical guidelines the result will be evident within 6 months of the plastic procedure. To preserve it, you need light physical activity and limited nutrition.

What is Classic or Mechanic Liposuction?
This is the traditional and most invasive method of liposuction. During the procedure, a cannula is inserted under the skin – a thin hollow tube connected to a vacuum apparatus. The doctor makes translational movements with the cannula (back and forth) and the apparatus, like a vacuum cleaner, sucks up fat.
What is Tumescent Liposuction (fluid injection)?
Several liters of saline with a local anesthetic (lidocaine) and a vasoconstrictor (epinephrine) are pumped under the skin into the area where the liposuction will be performed. The fat is sucked in or sucked out through small suction tubes. This is the most popular type of liposuction.
What is Ultrasound-assisted Liposuction (UAL)?
Ultrasound lipo is a procedure that destroys body cells using a cannula that emits ultrasonic waves and thus destroys fat-filled cells, which are then excreted from the body as a liquid. This method is suitable for pumping fat from areas with fibrous adipose tissue, such as gynecomastia, back or areas where liposuction has already been performed.
What is VASER Liposuction?
VASER liposuction is a type of ultrasonic liposuction. This is the gentlest surgical technique for eliminating localized fat deposits. The peculiarity of the method lies in the use of the VASER apparatus of the same name, under the influence of which the subcutaneous fat changes its characteristics and is carefully removed through small punctures.
Due to the fact that with the help of this technique the most viable fat cells are obtained, VASER ultrasonic lipo is the gentlest body-contouring operation, which is attracting more and more doctors and patients of plastic surgery.
What is Laser-assisted Liposuction (LAL)?
Lipo with a laser is a low-traumatic procedure: a micro-puncture is made, through which a thinnest laser probe, placed in a narrow cannula, is inserted under the human skin. Targeted laser energy liquefies fat cells. The emulsified fat then enters the bloodstream and is naturally evacuated.
What is Smart Lipo surgery?
What is Smart Lipo surgery?
Smart Lipo is the least invasive laser liposuction procedure performed under local anesthesia and sedation. The Smart Lipo device consists of a thin tube that holds a 1 mm laser fiber. The laser fiber produces laser energy that heats, melts, and coagulates targeted fat cells. The laser also seals the blood vessels to reduce pain, swelling, and bruising for patients. The liquefied fat is then more easily sucked out using the same cannula, or it enters the bloodstream and leaves the body naturally.
What is Power-assisted Lipo (PAL)?
Also known as vibration liposuction, PAL uses a special cannula with a mechanized system that moves quickly back and forth, allowing the surgeon to remove fat more easily. PAL minimizes any risks associated with liposuction thanks to the smooth, small and precise movements of the vibrating cannula tip. Thanks to the special cannula, surgeons do not need to exert too much effort. Bruising and recovery times are also reduced when the patient undergoes PAL.
Who is suitable for Liposuction?
You’re a good candidate for Lipo if you are over 18 years old, you are of normal or overweight (but body mass index is less than 30), there are no serious chronic diseases, the skin is firm and elastic, there are areas with fat deposits on the body.
Who is not suitable for Liposuction?
You are not a suitable candidate for liposuction if you are under 18 years old, if you have cancer, acute chronic diseases, diabetes mellitus, inflammation, blood clotting disorders, mental disorders.
What is the best age for Liposuction?
There are no age restrictions for liposuction, any healthy person over 18 can afford it, but it is advisable to do it for people up to 40–45 years old, since at this age the skin is still elastic and the result of the operation is expected to be positive. People over 50 may also need a skin tightening.
Which treatments can be done together with lipo?
You can also get abdominoplasty (tummy tuck), lipofilling, arm and thighs lift and breast surgeries together with Liposuction.
How dangerous is Liposuction?
There are always risks in carrying out any operation. Liposuction is no exception. There are two important points to make out. The volume of anesthetic injected during local anesthesia and the volume of fat removed during the liposuction itself. Lidocaine is often used for local anesthesia. Incorrect dosage or infusion rate can lead to problems. It is believed that it is not worth removing more than 3–5 liters of adipose tissue at a time. Violation of these recommendations and incorrect liposuction technique can also lead to serious complications. But in general, liposuction is as safe and proven as any other aesthetic surgery.
When will I see the result?
Depending on how much fat is removed, you can expect to see final results between 1–3 months after the procedure.
How long does the result from Liposuction last?
The surgery is designed to eliminate the so-called fat traps. During the operation, fat cells are destroyed, but not all. If a person has done everything possible before the operation and maintains his condition after the operation, the effect is very long-lasting. If there are disturbances in the diet, then the remaining fat cells in the same zone may increase or cells in other areas will begin to react. It all depends on you.
What is the aftercare for Liposuction?
At the initial stage, there are pains, swelling, discomfort, hematomas. The swelling may drift down to the legs. It is necessary to wear corrective underwear around the clock, protect the skin from direct sunlight, avoid hot water, mechanical and chemical peels, hard washcloths, exclude physical activity for a month. Sutures or scars after the introduction of the tubes are treated with an antiseptic.
In 1–2 weeks after the operation, the puffiness subsides, the skin tone is restored. To accelerate healing, a course of therapeutic massage is prescribed. You can take off your corrective underwear at night, but you need to wear it for 4–6 weeks.
After 3–4 weeks, the body removes dead fat cells. The skin becomes firm, and the figure acquires the necessary shape. Proper nutrition is essential to avoid re-gaining weight. Sutures and scars after surgery should be covered with a band-aid or clothing to protect against environmental influences.
If you adhere to all medical recommendations, the positive effect will be noticeable 6 months after the plastic surgery. To preserve it, you need light physical activity and limited nutrition.
When can I resume training?
Most doctors do not recommend returning to training earlier than a month after the operation.
Can men also get a Liposuction?
The operation is performed on both women and men.
Is Liposuction painful?
Since the procedure is performed under general or local anesthesia, the patient does not experience any pain during the operation. In the first few days after the operation, slight pain may occur, but this can be treated well with conventional painkillers.
How much fat can be removed with Liposuction?
According to various sources, it is recommended to remove no more than 3–5 liters of adipose tissue at a time. This volume is enough to remove problem areas.
Will I lose weight after liposuction?
The goal of any lipo is significant changes in the shape of the body and loss of volume of the operated parts. At the same time, liposuction is not a “slimming” procedure, although it has been noticed that overweight patients after surgery, followed by a special course of treatment, lose weight quite easily within a year.
Can liposuction eliminate cellulite?
The benefits of liposuction work exclusively under the skin. It will not cure any superficial skin conditions such as cellulite, stretch marks or scars. In fact, if too much fat is removed or the fat is removed unevenly, the procedure can make your cellulite more pronounced. For this reason, some surgeons consider those with advanced cellulite or similar skin conditions to be poor candidates for liposuction.
How will the skin react after liposuction surgery?
It is important to assess the elasticity and tone of the skin prior to surgery. Without considering the properties of the skin, liposuction can be wasted and everyone will be unhappy. If the skin is of normal elasticity and in good tone, there will be no problems and the skin will completely shrink, repeating the new contours.
In borderline conditions, the skin should be helped with the power of rehabilitation and physiotherapy procedures. If the skin is damaged (stretch marks, a lot of excess), then most likely it will not shrink and will sag. It is necessary to discuss the correction of excess skin either simultaneously or in a second step. For better skin contraction, compression garments are worn after surgery.
Can I give birth after belly liposuction?
Of course, after liposuction, you can become pregnant and give birth. It is difficult to predict how the operation area will react to hormonal changes and mechanical stress. Changes can only affect the aesthetic aspect. No harm to health.
Can I contact my doctor when I am back home?
Of course, you will be in regular contact with your doctor, who will be available to answer any questions you may have. You will be in regular contact with your attending physician, who will be available to answer any questions you may have. Based on the photos you send him, the progress is monitored and discussed together with you. Our competent team is available for you to answer your questions at any time.
History
Liposuction Treatment History
- For the first time in 1889, Howard Kelly reduced the volume of his patients’ buttocks in a very simple way by cutting off excess fat along with excess skin. As a result of this procedure, of course, scars remained and the fat did not hesitate to form again.
- This continued until 1921, when a gynecologist named Dujarier decided to help a ballerina remove excess fat from her calves using a curette, a gynecological instrument. Unfortunately, an artery was touched during the procedure and the leg had to be amputated some time later.
- Such a terrible failure was hard to forget, and such experiments were not carried out for half a century. Until 1974, when the Italian doctor Fischer, a gynecologist by the way, decided to use the same curette to remove excess fat deposits from his wife’s waist. This operation was more successful, but still did not fully meet the desired result.
- In 1977, a frenchman named Illu invented a new method of liposuction, which today is called “dry”. Instead of a knife, he used a round instrument that created a tunnel bypassing the most important blood vessels. In this way, he invented an operation method that does not leave scars.
- In 1985, dermatologists Jeffrey Klein and Patrick Lillis used the tumescent liposuction technique. The method consisted of injecting a special solution of saline, lidocaine and adrenaline into the desired area, which reduced the size of the blood vessels and greatly facilitated the removal of fat by converting it into a liquid mass.
- Ultrasound was first used in 1987 by an Italian, Dr Zocchi, and finally in the 1990s Dr Neira discovered how to use laser in this field.
