So What Is Facelift (or rhytidectomy)
Facelift (or rhytidectomy) is a plastic surgery aimed at eliminating the natural signs of aging in the face and neck area. With the help of this operation it is possible to reduce nasolabial folds, smooth out wrinkles on the cheeks and neck, tighten the skin, restore the contour of the face oval, sharpen the jawline, and get rid of “bulldog cheeks”. It must be remembered that circular tightening does not affect the natural aging processes of the skin, it only reduces their visible manifestations. The operation is performed on both women and men.
A face and neck lifting is indicated for patients who are faced with the following problems:
- Vertical wrinkles on the forehead and between the eyebrows;
- Overhanging tissues of the eyelids and eyebrows;
- Nasolabial folds;
- Wrinkles on the cheekbones, folds and depressions on the cheeks;
- Sagging skin on the chin;
- Loss of a clear oval of the face;
- “Double chin;
- Wrinkles in the temporal and eyebrow area;
- Creases and sagging of fabrics on the neck.
Types and Methods
There are following types of Face and Neck Lifting:
- Circular facelift
This technique allows you to correct age-related changes in all areas of the face. A circular facelift is performed through incisions in different parts of the face, which allows for a complete facelift. A facelift using this technique provides a significant correction of wrinkles and folds, tightens the oval of the face, makes its contour clearer. - Midface lift
Midface lift is a fairly popular operation, as it allows you to work with nasolabial folds, sagging tissues on the cheeks, wrinkles in the cheekbones and lips, lowered corners of the eyes, while not injuring other areas. - Lower face lift
Lower face lift provides correction of sagging cheeks, softens nasolabial folds, eliminates defects in the contour of the chin and, if necessary, the neck. - SMAS – lifting
This is a facelift that affects not only skin tissues, but also the musculoaponeurotic system. Lifting the facial muscles allows you to achieve excellent results and provides total rejuvenation. A facelift using this technique eliminates even serious age-related changes, deep wrinkles, pronounced folds, volumetric sagging. - Endoscopic forehead lift
The main advantage of the technique is based on the use of endoscopic equipment, which reduces the amount of intervention and trauma, as well as eliminates the appearance of noticeable scars. Mini-incisions, sufficient to insert the endoscope into the area of correction, are hidden on the scalp, under the hair. Endoscopic facelift is very popular among patients, as it allows reducing rehabilitation and the volume of interventions, providing a decent result and the absence of visible scars. - Neck lift
The surgeon can supplement the operation with a plastic surgery of the superficial neck muscle (platysmaplasty). An incision is made, excess subcutaneous fat and skin are removed. In some cases, an isolated neck lift may be performed. In this case, incisions are made only in the chin area and around the earlobes. - Brow lift
is an aesthetic operation that corrects the position of the eyebrows and tightens the skin on the forehead in order to give the eyes and face a more youthful appearance. Very often, a browlift is performed in conjunction with eyelid surgery.

History
Face and neck lift procedures have a long history, dating back to ancient times.
Early Techniques In ancient civilisations, various methods were used to rejuvenate the face and neck, including herbal remedies, facial exercises and massages. These techniques aimed to improve circulation and restore a youthful appearance.
Surgical Advances: The first documented surgical procedures for face and neck lifting began in the early 20th century. Surgeons experimented with techniques involving skin excision and tightening to remove sagging skin and wrinkles. However, these early methods often resulted in visible scarring and unnatural-looking results.
Subcutaneous Approaches: In the 1970s, subcutaneous techniques were introduced that focused on lifting deeper layers of facial tissues. These methods aimed to provide longer lasting results with minimal scarring and a more natural appearance.
SMAS Technique: The Superficial Musculoaponeurotic System (SMAS) technique gained popularity in the 1980s. This approach involved lifting and tightening the underlying muscle and connective tissue in addition to removing excess skin. It aimed to achieve a more comprehensive and longer-lasting rejuvenation.
Minimally Invasive Procedures: In recent years, advances in technology have led to the development of minimally invasive procedures for face and neck lifting. Techniques such as thread lift, injectables and laser treatments offer less invasive options with less downtime and minimal scarring.
The timeline of Face Lift and Neck Lifting:
- 1906 – The first mention of the surgical correction of age-related changes in the soft tissues of the face was registered.
- 1926 – A technique for excising excess skin around the eyes and temporal areas is described.
- 1974 – A facelift technique was described, during which plastic surgery was performed not only on the skin, but also on the muscular-fascial complex.
- 1976 – The anatomy of the musculoaponeurotic layer is described in detail and the term SMAS (subcutaneous musculoaponeurotic system) is introduced.
- 1979 – A technique for subperiosteal tightening of the skin of the forehead and middle third of the face is described.
- 1982 – SMAS resection and fixation method developed.
